Review: Cinderella at the Mercury Theatre, Colchester (Live Stream)

Writer: Andrew Pollard

Director: Ryan McBryde

While the lockdown continues, the Mercury Theatre is broadcasting their 2019/2020 panto Cinderella for free, while encouraging donations to support its Theatre. This spectacular panto is a warmhearted piece of family fun and is the perfect remedy for an Easter weekend stuck indoors.

Originally created for a live broadcast in local care homes and hospices, this production captures a lovely up close view of the action, without losing the spectacular design. From an elegant ballroom to the downtrodden Hardup Hall, complete with weird gadgets and gizmos, David Shields’ design gives a contemporary twist to a glitzy panto set.

There’s no need for drafting in celebrities here as the cast is impeccable. Special mention to Antony Stuart-Hicks and Dale Superville who play the ugly sisters Mylie and Kylie. Their sharp wit creates some one of a kind moments you won’t want to miss. Samuel Knight and Mari McGinlay make the perfect fairytale couple as Prince Charming and Cinderella with stunning vocals to match.

Andrew Pollard’s script is a fresh twist on the classic story. While it contains all the elements a panto needs, the comedy was super fast and laugh out loud. The twists on the characters of Dandin and Buttons adds something extra the production while closing with the call back ‘believe in yourself’ just sums up the feelgood factor this pantomime leaves you with.

While it may have been originally made for Christmas, this spectacular family treat is just what we need right now. Complete with an awesome score mixing songs from the stage and modern pop hits, this exquisitely designed, hilarious and upbeat fairytale will make the whole family smile together.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
