Breaking News: Council Backs Refurbishment of Prince of Wales Cannock

There’s been many twists and turns for the Prince of Wales in Cannock.

It was January this year when Cannock Chase District Council lost by one vote a key decision which would have released the funds needed to move forward regeneration plans, which would have included a proposal to demolish the Prince of Wales Theatre.

While the council promised at the time the regeneration plans would include a cultural venue,  what has come to light since, was the conformation the plan was to have a small studio space as part of a potential expansion of educational facilities in the town.

However, after taking office in May, a Reform led cabinet this evening asked to make a decision: either to continue with the proposals to demolish the Prince of Wales and move the previous plans forward, or instead focus regeneration money on refurbishing the Prince of Wales.

After only a couple of minutes of discussion, it was a unanimous decision to approve the following:

To retain and refurbish the Prince of Wales Theatre, noting that the wider
opportunities identified within the Development Framework would not be
progressed at this stage.

While the decision is subject to further due diligence, design work and full business cases, it will undoubtedly be a popular one among local residents. It will also allow campaigners to hold a cautious and brief sigh of relief.
