Showstopper! the Improvised Musical at the Stafford Gatehouse Theatre

A musical with no lines, no songs, no storyline sounds like chaos right? Showstopper! The Improvised Musical proves that theory wrong. With a cast who are always on the mark, alongside a talented couple of musicians the cleverly crafted musical forms in front of your very eyes.

Just before the show, the audience provides suggestions for a place, a title and a handful of musicals for the actors to take as inspiration. In addition, there are moments where the action freezes to open up further audience suggestions. It means that no one performance can ever be alike or even similar.

Tonight in Stafford I just Needed Milk: the Aldi Musical is born. Guys & Dolls, West Side Story, Little Shop of Horrors alongside The Last Five Years all influence the piece. Phantom of the Opera also makes a brief experience in Act Two.

The Plot goes off plenty of tangents with Kevin the Carrot and a Furby making a special appearance in the basement but with the help of a narrator to pause and focus action, it’s incredible to see a funny musical crafted in the moment, full of characters you will love, hate and have emotion for.

Showstopper! The Improvised Musical is an ‘improvedible’ performance, which is both a great musical and incredibly funny. A very talented cast bounce off each other to keep the plot moving without there being any dead space and at the same time pull of some showstopping numbers that you’d expect from any decent musical with a band of two musicians. While the cast went wild in the isles for this performance, there is no saying what they could do tomorrow night which makes this a piece of theatre you could go to again and again and again.
